Coastal garden design in Dorset

A coastal garden design in Dorset for a new family orientated, yet modern garden to accompany a recently completed contemporary property on the Christchurch Harbour.

The design connects the existing terrace areas and built in BBQ with the wider garden. The new garden aims to transform an existing blank canvas that will bring a new lease of life to the outside space which will include a dining terrace to allow the clients, friends and family to enjoy the long summer nights cooking on the BBQ. A functional wrap around games lawn is surrounded by a traditional yet modern style herringbone paved path to help link the rustic coastline to the property. The path will ease transition from one area of the garden to the other during the winter months.

At the bottom of the proposed coastal garden design in Dorset, a sunken firepit has been intricately designed to block out the offshore winds thus increasing the functionality of this feature and will allow our clients to use the firepit all year round. The firepit is to have under bench storage as well as LED lighting.

The coastal facing setting provides boat access from the side of the property to the jetty and into the Christchurch harbour which has been created using large format concrete slabs interplanted with evergreen low growing, clump forming planting.

Two discrete water features have been designed in the garden. One adjacent to the firepit and wrap around planting the another, a water bowl is set within the planting opposite the BBQ area. The idea behind introducing water into the garden is to mirror the surrounding coasting location.

The planting throughout the proposal is to mimic those that are found on our coastline which will thrive in the harsh elements that they will be exposed to. The species will be typically drought tolerant varieties that enjoy sandy soils and are low maintenance. A key factor in the planting style of this is garden is that the planting needs to be low growing so it doesn’t obstruct the 180 degree views out into the harbour.
